Assembly 16V
Scanned from the VW World magazine's 1987 new car addition. It shows the assembly of a 87 16v US version.

90 Japanese

A 90 Scirocco 16v scanned from a Japanese catalog. Note the black bumpers and body kit unlike the US version.

French 16V

Wind Tunnel

This is a shot of the actual wind tunnel testing that was done on the MK II Scirocco. VW had one of the best wind tunnels in Germany in the late 70's. You can see the smoke exiting the wand and streaming over the mock up chassis. The chassis is made of sulfur clay or "I.D. clay". The shape of the car can be changed by "modeling" the clay. Each change is tested and then the drag difference is recorded.

16V Intro

A photo from the 1983 Frankfurt auto show. This was one of the first Scirocco 16v presented to the public. The US had to wait three more years to drive this car. That year brown and silver was in style. Note the body kit is brown not black. The VW badge is silver and not black.

73 Scirocco

I am betting that you think I only have MK2 shots. It is true that I have a 16v MK2 and most of my shots are of MK2's. This is a shot of an early 1973 MK1. Note the big lights! This was taken during the development of the first Scirocco. Several headlight combos were designed in. Most of the time we see the the Quad round light version in the US. Note the double windshield wipers and the forward facing turn signals. --Scirocco is the German spelling of Sirocco, an Italian word, named after a hot desert wind that blows from the shores of northern Africa across the Mediterranean. This car looks like it is flying north from Italy.

Custom

I have one more for you from an after market company that customized Sciroccos. The description is in German. Please have someone on the page translate this for me. --Wambach KG, Postfach 730848, 200 Hamburg 73, Bundesrepublik Deutsland.

Die benotigten Motoren bezieht Wambach aus der Serienfertigung des Wolfsburger Konzerns.

Design Studio

This is a shot of the VW design studio where the Scirocco 2 was designed. The large full size drawings on the back wall are used to visualize the design and aid the construction of the clay models. In the foreground two men are working on a clay model of a VW Polo. There are two versions of the Scirocco 2 on the left. On the rear wall to the right are all the dash and interior drawings.

Concept 2

This is a concept drawing of the Scirocco 2 from the original development project at VW Design. Note the targa top. The drawing looks pretty similar to the final design. This drawing is typical of a Industrial Designer's "rapid vis" development package. Note the absence of door handles, the small window pillar and windshield wipers. Most of the time details like that are not shown because they junk up the drawing and take too much time to draw. Note how well the wheels fill the wheel wells. Designers usually draw sports cars like this. Now days designers draw 20 series tires on 20 inch rims.

Asso di Picche

This is Giugiaro's role in the design of the Scirocco 2 part 1.
This is the start of the story. Giugiaro designed 3 cars that were called the "ACE" series. The designs were sponsored studies. The first was for Karmann/Audi "Asso di Picche" shown at Frankfurt in 1973. The car's theme was based on the Boomerang ( G.G's earlier work). This Asso was a FWD 2-door, hatch back that seats four. Inside It had an independent display/control concept that was interesting. It had a curved two-tier cylinder shaped dash with handbag like leather seats and door panels. The seat cushions were replaceable. The car's chassis was based on the 80 platform. This study was done during the development of the MK1 Scirocco.

Asso di Quadri

The second project was shown in 1976 at the Turin International Auto Show and was for BMW/Karmann. Its name was "Asso di Quadri" (Ace of Diamonds). This project used the 320 chassis. For five years, most of Giugiaro's designs featured acute angles and straighter lines. The Assio di Quadri was a return to curves. The windshield corners and other corners were solid lines a cross and have been modified into curves. This detailed treatment of the study makes the overall effect very soft. The black painted front was a monolithic combination of a bumper/shield formed from polycarbonate. The rear end is a sloped hatchback with a fin and untrimmed lights. The interior emphasizes softness but is rather featureless and seat styling doesn't reflect Giugiaro's taste.
The BMW design was also sponsored by Karmann and was very close to the Scirocco MK2. Now, when the two cars were compared there were several differences. The front view of the BMW is much more impressive according to the reviewers of 1983. The rears were quite different again in favor of the BMW according to the same reviewers. The rear section of the Scirocco is significantly more rounded and its side view reflects a radically different concept in packaging, a real 2+2. VW wanted a 2+2 front wheel drive and GG did not want the 2+2. GG had been consulting with VW on facelifts. The new design was to be a in-house VW design with fixed proportions on paper by Giugiaro and would have improved aerodynamics, reduced lift, and more head room at the rear than the MK1. The VW design would employ the best use of interior space for both luggage and passengers and attractive styling, while having to work with the constraints of the A1 chassis.
The Scirocco 2 could have possibly been the "Ace of hearts"?
