In response to numerous requests, here is a detailed description of what went into making Arctic Wind.
While many have stated that the car could have been more radical engine and suspension wise, allowances were made to make the car reliable and drivable through most conditions.

From Decemer 1983 to August 1991 this car was the sole family car and driven daily.
All work, modifications done / installed by Joe Townsend (except paint and seat upholstery)
Engine / Drivetrain / Exhaust
- 1.9 Litre high compression European AUDI engine; assembled by Volkswagen Canada Remanufacturing, G grind camshaft, solid lifters, hand polished G60 engine aluminum valve cover, factory camshaft oil control baffle, oil squirters below pistons all bolt-on components ie coolant bosses, fuel distributer etc, are all hand polished, Techtonics heavy duty engine mounts.
- J&S Electronics Safe Guard Knock Sensor (fully adjustable, senses knock on an individual cylinder basis) in dash display of ignition retard and exhaust oxygen content, Bosch Platinum spark plugs, Blue Igniters ignition wires.
- AUDI large throttle body matched to ported, hand polished & flowed intake manifold, custom made 2 inch polished aluminum air inlet tube, K&N air filter.
- External ten row oil cooler with 90 degree C thermostat, oil pan baffling and windage tray, G60 engine oil pan gasket (adds an extra 1/2 litre to oil capacity), magnetic oil drain plug, Pennzoil synthetic oil. VDO dual oil pressure sender, lower temperature coolant thermostat & fan switch.
- Supersprint header and exhaust system (header is wrapped with heat tape, which reduced cockpit footwell temperatures by over 20 degrees C).
- Hand polished 90 amp Bosch alternator, modified alternator pully shroud, 4 gauge wiring for both hot and earth(ground) cables, dual battery configuraton (which necessitated relocating the windshield washer bottle).
- Spectre hose, clamp and bolt covers.
- Custom made under under hood insulation.
- 5 speed close ratio transmission (not the self-machining one), Luk 210 mm clutch, short shift kit.
- Eibach Pro-Kit progressive rate springs, Tokicko Illumina adjustable shcok absorbers (dampers), Autotech front upper, rear (both hand polished) stress bars, front lower subframe, 19mm front, 25 mm rear sway bars.
- Complete 16V Scirocco brake conversion: when I say complete, I mean complete! (4 wheel discs, calipers, master cylinder, brake booster, proportioning valves, pedal cluster, brake light switch, stub axles, backing plates in fact everything was replaced except the two hard lines running under the car.), cross drilled rotors, Autotech stainless steel covered Teflon brake lines.
- MOMO I.D.E.A. 15 X 7 road wheels, Continental 195/50/150 V rated tires.
- Every item connected to the drive train and engine was either hand polished (if aluminum), or detaled ie; a arms, drive shafts, rear axle, steering rack, fuel pump etc. were painted in matching colours.
Exterior
- Body and paint work by Frontenac Auto Body, Kingston ON -37 holes filled, shaved emblems, rear stone guards. the leading edge of the hood, body kit, and rear wheel arches had 'gravel guard' paint prep applied before the respray.
- Kamei X1 Euro spec bory styling and grille spoiler. (bumpers, body kit, grille & grille spoiler, mirrors, tai lamps all colour matched to body colour paint code LA7Y)
- European Scirocco bumpers, Hella European Scirocco headlamps, city lamps, turn signals, side markers. Headlamp bulbs - 80/100 watt relay contolled.
- 1985 Scirocco rear spoiler (needed to replace washer nozzle too).
- Black trim on 'B' pillers and doors. Armor Door Plates, Bosch dual blade wiper arm (on driver's side)
- Donmar Skyroof sliding glass sunroof, Fuba 16V roof mounted antenna (buy the Bosch it is a lot better!)
Interior
- Custom upholstered Flofit Sport Seats (rear seats in matching fabric), Schroth Rallye 3 harness belt system.
- MOMO Corse steering wheel and shift knob (custom dyed blue to match colour scheme).
- Custom designed and manufactured centre console (relocated radio, VDO Night Design 3 gauge {oil temp, pressure, volts} package added, C Box cassette holder. Console, under dash trays, door pockets, shift boot and hand brake boot covered in grey velour matching the velour used on the custom velour headliner. Handbrake lock.
- Doduco adjustable interval wiper relay, factory accessory lamp switch, aluminum foot pedals, custom made floor mats, embroidered dash cover. Centre vent removed for centre channel speaker.
- Custom made grey coloured gauge package with integrated readout of knock sensor activity and oxygen sensor readout.
- Owner installed power windows, tinted windows, rear view mirror with integrated map lights, Audi 200 chrome striker pins.
- Owner designed boxed boot (trunk) with fire extinguisher, first aid kit, polished tools, visible 15 inch full size spare tire.
BLAUPUNKT Audio System
- Tuscon head unit (4 X 25 watt) CD Controller (can control up to 10 CD changers), AM/FM Casette
- BMA 5350B 5 Channel Amplifier (4 X 50 + 150 watt) & 2 X 30 watt (for centre channel)
- CL4664P speakers in front doors and centre channel
- RL 4625 4 X 6 speakers in rear (for fill).
- Dual Velocity 10 Sub-woofers in owner designed and manufactured bass reflex box (with plexiglass window)
- Audio Control ESP-3 image amplifier (centre channel decoder)
- Audio components mounted in boot in an enclosed plexiglass box with fan cooling.
- Gold Plated power distribution system relay controlled. 4 gauge power, 10 gauge speaker wires.
