Arctic Wind 1 -just after the first magazine article (Dec. '90 VW & Porsche Magazine)
Arctic Wind 2 -Test Photo for the VW & Porsche Magazine article
Arctic Wind 3 -Another test photo. Note the filler between the tail lamps. Looked cool, but necessitated relocating the plate, drilling a hole in the body and running wires for the plate lamps. Incidentally, I used a front plate mount to attach the assembly to the bumper.
Arctic Wind 4 -In 1992 the car was repainted. I decided to go to the 'clean' look. There were 37 holes filled. If you look also at the next photo it is noticble all the items removed. Note the shaving of all emblems. The car looked a lot cleaner. In fact, if not for the licence plate (Show VW), many people did not even know what make of car it was.
VW Trends -Main Photo from the February 1993 issue of VW TRENDS Magazine article.
Trophies -Showing Arctic Wind has been rewarding. This photo displays the results of the summer of 1993. For two consecutive summers, we travelled over 17,000 kilometres to attend seventeen events.
Rear View -Rather than follow the trend, I 'greyed' out the tail lamps. Also the 8V emblen causes a few double takes.
Gauges -Although not the easiest job,the gauge faces were done in grey. The vision at night is reduced somewhat though.
Red Interior - Two highlights are displayed here, a centre channel speaker in the middle of the dashboard (scuttle), where the vent speaker was. I relocated the radio up in the console centre where the ashtray was. Gauges went below. This necessitated rebuilding the console with aluminum plate.
Blue Interior -One of the major problems in keeping competitive at shows is constant change. Even though we had won many awards for 'Best Interior', I decided to redo the whole car from red trim to blue. Things like the Schroth Harness belts, the Momo steering wheel and shift knob had to be replaced. Also noticable is the velour trim on the lower dash and console along with the shift boot and brake handle. This is how Arctic Wind looked in the EUROPEAN CAR Magazine article.
Red Boot -Much thought went into the Blaupunkt Stereo System. Over 400 watts, seven channels, tuned for jazz music, not to boom.
Blue Boot The next year the boot was completely redone. Most people think that the blue trim with a grey car looks better, I must agree.
Stock Engine -Your standard 1.8 Litre (JH) Fuel Injected 90 horsepower engine. Photo is scanned from 1984 Americain Scirocco brochure. Unfortunately, there are not many photos of Arctic Wind in stock condition.
1.9 Litre -A photo showing that yes Audi did make an 1.9 Litre engine This is what is currently in Arctic Wind. It has high compression, piston squirters, a European GTi camshaft, ported and polished heads and much more. Horsepower went from 90 to approximately 135 to 140 (estimated by engineers at Volkswagen Canada Remanufacturing, and they should know).
Blue Engine -After countless hours of work, the final product. I polished everything, no chrome here. Note dual batteries and aluminum pipe from the air box to the throttle body. The valve cover is from the G60 motor with a custom made throttle cable bracket.
Exhaust -Prior to the full Supersprint system, this is how I displayed the exaust at shows. Kind of funky, but after it was copied by so many people, I stopped doing it myself.
