Media Scirocco Sightings:  What you had to say....

SHAWN C MEZE started all this on September 2, 1997 by writing:

I happened to be flipping through the channels today and when I got to the "FX" channel I caught a glimpse of a MK-II Scirocco! So, being me, I continued to watch. The show is "Hart to Hart" (Sucks) and the basic scenario was that there was a Rally race somewhere in South America. The Harts were driving a Mercedes 450 SEL in rally trim. (So what) and the bad guys were in either an 82 or 83 Scirocco with the full Zender Z-400 body kit, Ronal wheels, roll cage Rally lights mounted above the grill on the hood and nasty unacurate V-8 sounds to go with it. Anyways, I just thought id throw this out there. Its the first time I have ever seen a Scirocco in a show. Ive seen a few in the background scenes buy never as a featured vehicle.

Just so everyone knows in the movie "Dawn of the Dead" the main characters were trapped in a mall, with dead stuff off course. Inside the mall (on display of all things) is a brand spankin new mk1 scirocco. In the climax of the movie all burly characters pile into the scirocco with machine guns and use it as a battle wagon. I think they might have even struck down a couple zombies with the rocco itself. Great movie.

Tonight i saw Kindergarten Cop, and was very surprised to see a scirocco in the movie. it was only for a split second, but it was unmistakeable. it's just before Arnold goes for his first day of school, just before he gets there. it only shows the tail end, but i thought it was too weird. until now i'd never noticed a scirocco in any movie!

Just seen a rerun of the third "Cannonball" film SPEED ZONE, and noticed a white scirocco parked in the street near the end of the film. (About 15 minutes before the end when the Cops are chasing the babes in the black sports car) (unfortunatly you only see it for a fraction of a second so Video's on pause) :)

Not only did Eddie Murphy's new movie Metro suck in my opinion, but they smashed a totally good Scirocco II in the streets of San Francisco. Part where the guy is trying to get away in the 4x4, smacks the rear quarter of the Scirocco. This pissed me off as there Scirocco's should be classified as endangered species (especially here in Ohio).

I dunno, I think, I'm not sure, don't quote me on this, etc. When I find out the name of the band, I'll send it your way. There's also one in "Casino" - there's a scene where Joe Pesci is running around Vegas changing cars to avoid a tail or something, and while the camera pans him running through a parking garage he runs right by a good looking white 78-79 Scirocco (you can only see the back end).

n8yjf@juno.com added to the growing list with:

Hey Greg! Stopped by the page briefly this evening and thought I'd add another Scirocco sighting. I believe the movie was Bull Durham. Right at the beginning there is a silver Mk. II 8v parked on the street with several other cars. (I believe it had the nine spoke "tarantula" wheels.) I haven't seen the whole movie, I was just checking our copy at the library as someone brought it back and said it didn't work.

Mindwriter & Passionartist adds:

I never watched the "Ellen" sitcom very much till one night at the begining of one of her segments I saw a red Scirocco parked outside of what was suppose to be her bookstore. I've seen the same clip several times, they've used it over and over. I decided it must be Ellen's car. HA! While she was "coming out" she should have also admitted to driving a screamer!

Eric L Ellis writes:

I ran across your page and was surprised to see no mention of 'Tommy Boy' or 'The Great Outdoors'. The Scirocco II in 'Tommy Boy' is in the parking lot of Calahan Auto. 'The Great Outdoors' has a red Scirocco II nearly run over John Candy when he is walking across the street.(poor little Scirocco...must have been a really bad scare) I'll keep my eyes open 'cause I know I have seen more. UPDATED 10/10/01 It was the kid playing his son that ran out into the street and nearly into the path of the Scirocco.

Dennis Thomason writes:

Greg Davis adds:

Walker, Texas Ranger - episode "In God's Hands"
At the end of the show the Rangers get in a shotout with the bad guys. Several Rangers are hiding behind a black 16V. It looked pretty beat up to begin with, and naturally it gets shot up pretty bad. And another one goes to Scirocco heaven.... :(

Eric Ragot chimes in with:

Hey guys, I think I have another one to add. A Few Good Men. There was a black, 8v, Mk II, mono-wiper 'rocco in the parking spot on the street behind where Tom Cruise parks when he first visits the newsstand guy. (Note: This was about 20 minutes into the movie, after Cruise argues with that female lawyer, gets into his car, and drives away)

BIGGUNBB62 boldly adds:

Jamie added this siting:

Not a TV one, rather a Jeffrey Archer (the MP) short story, "A Twist in the Tale" (don't know which one) : the narrator invites a woman back to his flat to play a game of chess. He comments something about how he'd never noticed how high a womans dress is raised when she sits in his Scirocco - no thats not the only reason I bought mine.....

Dave Novak adds:

Tonight, I was watching a Seinfeld episode.. the one where George has that weird doll that looks like his mother, and Elaine has a poster of the three tenors signed by one of them. Anywho, about 20 minutes into the episode, as Elaine exits from somewhere onto the street, I spot the rear end of a maroon Mk1 Scirocco in the foreground parked at the side of the road.

Dave Novak adds another siting:

This Ford commercial comes on (December 1998). No biggie. I'm watching. I realize the guy's sitting inside of a Mk1 Scirocco!!! The commercial is for Ford trucks, and the setting is this big guy squeezed into a Mk1 Scirocco stuck in a traffic jam on the freeway. The view is from the floor in front of the passenger seat looking up towards the driver and out the window. The thing that caught my attention was the dome light above the driver's door. Then the shifter...then the two big speedo/tach circle cutouts....

On April 02, 1998 Andy saw:

A Scirocco on Jeopardy..."Alex asked , "v.w. made this car in 1974 named for a wind on the mediteranian sea." I swear I was just thinking, wonder if they ever had any questions pertaining to scirocco.Just happened tonight at 7:45. Totally bizarre!!!!!

Owen adds:

I feel shame, but i must confess, I saw "Spice World" tonight. Needless to say it wasn't worth the $1.75 to get in, but i had to take my girlfriends little sister, so it wasn't my choice. Anyway, the hilight of the movie was when i spotted a white scirocco in the background of one of the scenes at night. Yeah, fun.

I dunno if anyone else has seen it yet, but in "Kiss The Girls" there is a grey MKII scirocco in front of them when they're on the highway up to Vancouver.

Updated 4/9/2004: This occurs about halfway through the movie after Kate and Dr. Cross fly to Los Angeles.  They and two cops are following a suspect in a Land Rover. "Where does this road go" asks the black cop.  "Vancouver" answers the white cop. The camera goes back to Dr. Cross' car - you see the early Mk2 (small wing) in the right hand lane.

Ever wonder what It would be like to run from the Police in your Scirocco? Some one actually tried, and it was caught on Video (watch out for signs that read "DEAD END") This sighting was about Nov 98 on the show "Worlds Scariest Police Chases" or something similar to that. I nearly fell off the couch when I saw taillights like my beloved Scirocco through a police car windshield. The car was a 79-81 Scirocco S, Mars Red, and excellent condition. The driver was able to keep his lead and appeared to have good control of the car at speeds they said were 100+ mph on a curvy country highway. He even jumped the curb and went rallye-ing through a city park at one point. Unlike the metal deforming, fire belching, and bone crunching endings of the majority of chases, this one ended with the driver taking a bonehead turn down a dead end road. The driver then stopped the car jumped out and decided to pull a gun on the dozen or so officers filled with the thrill of the chase, bonehead move #2. Needless to say, he was shot several times, and somehow survived. The Scirocco came out undamaged and stopped only by a dead end road. My friend commented when I told him about the episode that the driver was probably suicidal due to electrical problems he was having, and we both sighed and said "Yep, been there". Catch this on in the re-runs. PS. I do not condone this behavior, the police are your friends, you should never drive over the posted speed limits, you should never lie, you should never talk back to your mom, etc, etc, etc........

Also rief ich mal an. Man bekam dort alles was das Herz begehrt. Die Show begann .....

In part 9 (the 1980's) of the PBS series, "The Remarkable 20th  Century," the narrator talks about how Detroit was trying to play catch up to the German and Japanese cars which were increasing their market share. The program shows a Ford Escort and goes on to state that the domestic offerings were lacking in charisma and then proceeds to show a clip of a Cosmos silver Scirocco S driving in front of the U.S. Capitol building! The program will be repeated in the Los Angeles area tonight (Saturday) at 9:00 PM on channel 58. The Scirocco shows up around 25 minutes into the program and appears to be vintage footage. Does anyone know where this clip is from? benton-----

Not sure if anyone has pointed this one out...I was watching gleaming the cube last night, and saw a Red MK1 with gold mesh rims. It was when Christian Slater was skating down the road right after the Vietnamese translation in the Pool Hall. The car was right behind him for a bit. It was a pretty good shot too.

"Second Nature" - A 2002 London based movie. Approximately 1 hour in to the movie, Paul Cane (Alec Baldwin) goes to meet Dr. Harriet Fellows (Louise Lombard) in the hospital parking garage. This happens just after the newspaper boy brings a paper with a note written on it to Dr. Fellows. After smashing his car in to the guards following Dr. Fellows, Paul gets out of his car and gets in to Dr. Fellows' Mercedes. As they pull away, on the left side you see a red Mk2 with black body kit and teardrop wheels.

I just spotted a Scirocco in an Irish movie we're watching - "I Went Down" (1997). It's an early Scirocco 2 (right hand drive of course).
